Winter brings quiet to the trails of Wehr Nature Center. Signs of animals are more visible now. Four legged critters, concealed by vegetation in warmer months, leave tracks in the snow revealing not only their presence but their activities. Small wintering birds leave tiny wing prints below seed heads of last summer’s flowers and the cardinals at the feeders seem even brighter. It’s a time to try out the snowshoes and leave your own tracks or enjoy an enchanting stroll in the winter wonderland. It’s a time of surprising reds of dogwood, windblown grasses in the prairie, and colorful water birds that brave the open water and ice on Mallard Lake. And it’s a time to sit on a bench on the pier, gaze at the frozen lake, contemplate the peacefulness of nature, and catch a snowflake on your tongue.
